First Thoughts: Glashutte Original Sixties Panorama Date

Watch Overview:

The Glashutte Original Sixties Panorama Date is a striking watch that is a playful and modern take on the classic dress watch. This watch is for someone who desires exceptional quality, distinctive design, and subtle class from their timepiece.

Glashutte Original offers quite a few variations of the Sixties including various options in stainless steel as well as a lineup of no-date watches. The specific Sixties watch that I spent time with was the reference 2-39-47-01-01-04; this pretty much means it has a gold case and silver dial.

My Impressions:

I have always been a big fan of Glashutte Original watches and the Sixties line has always been one of my favorites from the brand; it is sort of their “fun” collection. Let me explain, Glashutte Original has a few themes for their timepieces and these include: traditional/formal dress watches, vintage inspired watches, and professional/sports models. The Sixties Panorama Date is a watch that sort of crosses over with a few of those categories; it embodies some features of vintage dress watches such as a solid 18k rose gold case and its stunning, yet simple, dial featuring printed Arabic numerals as well as applied gold indices. The inclusion of a beautifully made Louisiana Alligator leather strap also enhances the watches dressy appearance. Despite its formal character, the Sixties is proportioned similarly to a sports watch with the exception of it’s thickness, which is a relatively slim 12.4 mm. Overall, I love the design of the Sixties and it is exclusively unique; there really aren’t any other watches like it.

The Sixties Panorama Date is a watch that has a lot to offer. With that said, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those that can appreciate this watch for what it is, it is almost perfect. One of the things that I noticed during my time with the watch was just how beautifully constructed it is. The fit and finish of the watch is simply superb and the attention to detail is obviously present. For example, the sapphire caseback is domed; this means that you get an incredible 3D perspective of the exquisitely decorated calibre 39-47 automatic movement which just makes you smile when you look at it. Yes, the 40 hour power reserve is a bit lacking, but I really don’t think it’s something that detracts from the watch as a whole. The dial features a beautifully grained silver finish that reflects wonderfully in the light and is asymmetrical. Other watchmakers really need to take notes on how Glashutte Original executed the date window with this watch. Usually, I don’t like watches with date features because they are generally poorly executed and ruin the symmetry of the dial, but Glashutte Original nailed it with this one. Instead of just putting it at 3 or 6 o’clock like most manufacturers do, Glashutte Original placed the date wheel in between 6 o’clock and the center of the watch; this means that the watch remains perfectly symmetrical, so well done Glashutte Original. To be honest, the only thing I would change about this watch would be its dimensions. I have relatively small wrists (about 16cm or 6.25 inches in circumference) and unfortunately, I could never wear this watch without it looking like a dinner plate on my wrist. Thankfully, the relative slimness of the watch as well as it’s short, curved lugs help it wear somewhat smaller, but it still wears true to its 42 mm diameter size. That said, the no-date variation of this watch features a smaller 39 mm diameter and slimmer 9.4 mm case which I would assume is much more wearable; anyway, it’s just nice that Glashutte Original gives us the choice.

Overall, the Glashutte Original Sixties Panorama Date is a very special watch that is extremely well made, quite rare, and perfect for anyone looking for something that is just atypical, but in the best way.
