New From Switzerland

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

Earlier this week, Omega officially released a selection of new watches including the new blacked-out Seamaster Diver 300M Black Black. Let’s dig a bit deeper (or should I say dive? This is a dive watch after all).

The Seamaster Diver 300M Black Black is quite an interesting watch to say the least. It gets its name from the fact that it is, well, black... I wonder what inspired the design team at Omega to create this design as it genuinely reminds me of the Batmobile, and I’m not complaining, it really does look pretty cool (at least from the press photos).

Now blacked-out watches are not necessarily a new thing; with the PVD coated Porsche Design Chronograph 1 from the early 70’s being an early example of such a watch. However, what sets the Omega Black Black apart is its impressive use of alternate materials; namely ceramic. As a material for watches, ceramic is great because it is scratch-resistance, light weight, and has chemically stable/hypoallergenic properties. Every single component of this watch is made of Omega’s proprietary Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO2) ceramic aside from the movement, crystals, and black rubber strap. Yes, I did say crystals as the Black Black features a display caseback which showcases the hard hitting Omega Caliber 8806. The Black Black also features black anthracite Super-Luminova and multiple types of finishing to allow for higher contrast/legibility in all lighting conditions.

Now, here’s the really cool thing. The Seamaster Black Black is still a Seamaster and it still features an impressive 300M water resistance rating and it is designed in such a way where it can effectively be worn like any other sports watch. That’s the genius of the watch, it seems to offer everything, but just in a different package than one might expect.

Now, I haven’t seen this watch in person, so I am going to reserve my final judgement(s) for now, but I am initially quite impressed with it. Most importantly, I do think this watch would be a nice companion to Gotham’s Dark Knight.
